Litle Sadie

I went out last night to take a little round
I met little Sadie and I blowed her down
I run right home and I went to bed
.44 smokeless under my head (this verse is repeated)

I begun to think what a deed (indeed?) I done
I grabbed my hat and I began to run
I began to run but I run too slow
And they overtook me down in Jericho

Standing on the corner ringing my bell
Up stepped a sheriff from Thomasville
Said "Young man, is your name Brown
Remember the night you may have blowed little Sadie down?" <===|
(the music stops and this line is spoken) =|
"Oh yes sir my name is Lee
I murdered little Sadie in the first degree
First degree and second degree
If you got any papers would you serve 'em to me?"

Took me downtown and dressed me in black
Put me on a train and they brought me back
Had no one to go my bail
Crammed me back into the county jail

Judge and jury took their stand
Judge had papers in his right hand
Forty-one days and forty-one nights
Forty-one years to wear the ball and stripes

Enjoy. "In search of Little Sadie," from the same album, has slightly
different lyrics.

I *think* I have one.

If you got any papers won't you read 'em to me

is what I heard. Idea is that the murderer is illiterate.

In graduate school, I misinterpreted these lyrics to
the academic meaning of "degree" and "papers" :-)
